What is a Fitness for Duty Evaluation?

A fitness for duty evaluation is an assessment used to determine whether an employee is able to perform the essential functions of their job without posing a threat to themselves or others. These evaluations are typically conducted in situations where an employee’s physical or mental health may be impacting their ability to perform their job duties, such as after an injury, illness, or traumatic incident. The evaluation involves completion of a clinical interview, review of work-related records and treatment records, and standardized testing. The evaluating psychologist will consider factors such as the employee’s mental health history, current symptoms, and functional capacity when making a determination of fitness for duty. The results of the evaluation can then be used by the employer to make decisions about the employee’s ability to return to work or need for modified work accommodations. The evaluations are designed to be impartial and objective, and results are kept confidential to protect the privacy of the employee.
