What is a Pre-Employment Evaluation?
A pre-employment evaluation is a process used by employers to assess job applicants before making a hiring decision. These evaluations consist of review of relevant records (i.e. background investigation, recent mental health treatment, overview of essential job duties), a clinical interview, and personality testing. Psychological testing is used to measure traits such as honesty, dependability, and emotional stability to determine if the applicant be a suitable fit for the specific job requirements and demands. Ultimately, the evaluating psychologist makes a recommendation of suitable or unsuitable for the position in question and relays this recommendation to the potential employer. This recommendation, along with supporting detail, help the employer identify if the applicant is suitable for the job. Pre-employment evaluations can help to reduce employee turnover, costs associated with hiring and training new employees, and minimize risk of early termination or worker’s compensation claims. In some cases, pre-employment evaluations are required by law. For instance, all individuals applying for a position in law enforcement must complete a pre-employment evaluation under CA POST standards.
